Pod Porn Will Be Huge, PodShow President Says

WASHINGTON — The adult industry was already abuzz when XBiz reported earlier this month on Apple’s plans to unveil a video iPod, the prospect causing industry players to salivate at the chance to tap into the dominating market share of the current iPod player.

Adam Curry, president of podcasting portal PodShow Inc., said the drooling was for good reason.

“Porn is just going to be huge,” he said during his Daily Source Code podcast this week. “The porn guys are just going, 'holy moly.’”

Seeing as iPod music player currently has a solid hold on 74 percent of the portable Mp3 market, with roughly 27 million units sold in the country so far, the idea of the iPod as the holy grail of portable porn isn’t far-fetched.

Curry suggested the adult industry’s effect on podcasting would be similar in magnitude to the porn-fueled dominance of VCRs in the 1980s, and that the market has only begun to be recognized.

“Video dating should happen [through podcasting],” he said. “A video dating feed. That's also a form of podcasting. We're only now just beginning to understand the massive changes in our media landscape. PDF-casting? Sure! Our version of media is changing, changing.”

Curry and others in the industry have also speculated that Apple may be planning its own online video store to coincide with its video player. Just last week Apple trademarked the word “Vingle,” which editors at AppleInsider.com said is likely a combination of the words “video” and “single,” and described a video version of the iTunes Music Store business in three filings with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.
